First off, let me start by saying sorry that I just keep putting off my 3 blogs a month until the very end of the month! I really am not trying to put it off…I have just had some major writers block. I have sat down numerous times to write this blog but I just cannot get into my writing groove. I have so many topics in my head but cannot find the words to put on paper. I will do better, hopefully starting next month! Also, to all those who continue to come back post after post….THANK YOU, I am glad you are finding my little hobby enjoyable!
Now, to my Austin Adventure…..
After all the times that I have been to the great state of Texas, I finally visited the state capital! Let me tell you, it was all that I read about and more. This city is filled with people from all walks of life and more food trucks than I could visit in 10 lifetimes.
After Jess and I visited Waco, we decided our next stop would be Austin. To me Austin is most famous not just being the state capital, but for the South by Southwest Music Festival. Other than that I wasn’t too familiar with Austin. However, Austin was on Jess’ travel bucket list, so…no better time than the present than to visit.
Austin is about a hour and half from Waco, so a very easy drive. On our way we stopped in Tempe so I could show Jess the world famous Buc-ee’s. If you’ve been to Texas but not been to a Buc-ee’s, then you haven’t really seen Texas. Buc-ee’s is the BIGGEST rest stop/restaurant/souvenir shop/gas station ever. I have linked it here just so you can get an idea of how big this place really is! They have anything and everything you could ever want on a road trip, and of course…the beaver nugget. Beaver Nuggets are basically puffed popcorn covered in caramel.
We stayed at an air b-n-b close to downtown Austin. There were a lot of options, but it was a holiday weekend so a lot of the good places were already reserved when we decided to book. If you are planning on going on a busy weekend, I would say make sure to book well in advance. The place we stayed was closed to downtown and even though I did like the place itself, the area felt safe. But, it was all okay because we didn’t spend much time there anyway.
From what we read and talked about with locals, there are a few main areas that are fun to hang out. Rainey street (house bars, older group), East 6th street (older crowd), West 6th street and what is known as dirty sixth (college age), and South Congress (historic part of downtown, old bars, nicer restaurants and shops.)
The first night we met up with my friend from back home in Indiana who now lives in Houston, but spends weekends in Austin at her boyfriends family’s lake house. We hit up bars on east 6th first, the crowd seemed to be recently college grads, lots of them watching Football games and having a few bears and pizza or tacos. We hit up a few bars on that street, then we were hungry so we decided to head over to Rainey street, which we heard had lots of food trucks. Rainey Street is full of older homes turned into bars, which gives of kind of a huge house party vibe. Also, kind of makes you feel like you are Animal House. If you are from Indiana, this area reminded me a lot of Broad Ripple meets Fountain Square but on steroids.
Obviously Texas is warmer than most places year round, so all the bars have great outdoor areas to sit and hang out, and again since a lot of them have food trucks, they have food available all night! We hit up a bar with a Pizza truck in the back that we heard was a must eat, and it didn’t dissapoint! If i remember the name of the pizza, I will link it here. (I remembered–VIA 313)
One thing about Austin, you will never have a hard time finding a place to eat or drink, there is alway something open! We went to so many bars to just have 1 drink and then move on that I cannot even tell you the name of them all.
Sunday we got up and had breakfast at a restaurant called Kerbey Lane Cafe, my friends boyfriend recommended it, there are numerous locations. One thing Kereby Lane is famous for is their queso, every table had queso when we walked in. Let me remind you it was 9 a.m. We of course also got the queso and it was delicious. The drinks were also good, so if you are in the Austin area, I would recommend it!
After breakfast we went to the Barton public spring. This place was packed. A tip if you are planning to go, there are two places to buy tickets with a credit card (looks like a parking meter), you don’t have to wait in the super long line up by the entrance, there is another location to buy tickets on the other side of the museum. Also, you can pay cash at the entrance. This place is so fun, I did take a video, which you can see on my instagram.
After we spent a few hours at Barton Springs, we went and ate at Shady Grove. They have a great patio if you want to sit outside. I won’t recommend the mixed drinks, mine weren’t very good. However, I had a pretty good Chilli Cheese burger, and we all shared some delicious green chili fries. I have never had fresh green chili and I would highly recommend if you are in the south.
That night we decided to venture out to the South Congress area. This area is a more historic area of town, there are shops and some great restaurants. We just walked around and bar/restaurant hopped and had a small snack and drink at each location. We had a lot of fun just exploring the South Congress Area.
The next day we slept in a bit, then we went to Biscuits and Groovy for breakfast. If you are into biscuits and gray, then this is the place for you!! After breakfast we drove around and looked at the famous murals we missed during the other days. If you didn’t know Austin is home to some of the most famous instagram murals! After that we headed back to Dallas to catch our flight home.
Unfortunately, I didn’t take many pictures. The pictures I did take were mostly of my food, surprise, surprise…haha! I did a small little insta post with highlights from our trip if you want to check it out!
Austin was really fun and hopefully you at least got some good food recommendations from the post! Let me know in the comments below if you have ever been to Austin and let me know what your favorite things to do and see there!
